Matariki

Matariki is special to the Maori people. It is important because it is a celebration of culture, language and people.

Matariki is a cluster of stars that signal the start of the Maori New Year. There 7 sisters. Their names are Matariki, Waiti, Waita, Tupu-a-nuku, Tupu-a-rangi, Ururangi and Waipuna-a-rangi.                                          by Nakeeta Jade

I like the song about Matariki called E mata e. It is a very nice song, my friends and I like it to sing it together. I taught my family about Matariki.                                                             by Bernadette Ntamwenge

In Japan, the same cluster of stars is called Subaru. by Graeme

Matariki happens in the middle of the year. The biggest of the 7 star sisters is Matariki.                                                             by Tikenati

Matariki has two meanings. It means Tiny Eyes and Eyes of God. Today Matariki is about celebrating the unique place we live in and respecting the land we live on.                                                         by Leilani
