Term 2 2013

Manaakitanga (Red House):  ‘Caring and Sharing’

Integrated Inquiry Learning:  This term, the learning focus for the Inquiry Concept was on ‘Self Directed Learner’.  Learners soon discovered that when they become an empowered learner they become a self-directed learner.  It was pleasing to see many of our Manaakitanga Learners becoming more independent in their learning and striving to do their best.

Here are some of the highlights for Term 2 from our Manaakitanga PLG.
Room 4 did a variety of self- directed, self- managing activities and tasks. They started with skip counting and learnt their timestables. They reinforced and practised these skills, when they worked on their homework contract activities.

The Learners also enjoyed following the instructions when they made origami and completed two pieces - a heart and a jumping frog. They are still working on their butterflies.

Room 4 celebrated by having a One Hundred Day party.  They have been counting their learning days since the start of the year.  They used this ‘100 day’ activity to learn the place value, write numbers, build knowledge and develop their self- management skills to make good choices.

Their tree of knowledge is getting pretty full of leaves that display all the learners' achievements so far this year.

They used the experience to learn as much as they could when it hailed really hard one day.

Room 4 used Matariki and some of their curious questions to do research on the Internet.  The Learners proudly displayed their information on posters hanging in their classroom.

Room 10: Tena Koutou i te whanau.  Room 10 has had a very busy term this term.
They were lucky enough to travel to Haranui Marae to learn about Maori tikanga.  The
Learners enjoyed their day.  Jevonte said, “I enjoyed learning about my culture and doing Haka”.  For Matariki week, the whanau unit worked with the different PLGs and taught them about Matariki. The Kapa Haka group performed at the whole school assembly.  They felt empowered performing in front of the whole school.

Room 14 have been recognising different ways on how they can become a self-directed Learner and what tools they need for learning.  They investigated possible ideas for the garden and what they need for a healthy breakfast.  They have been learning how to follow and write up instructions.  Some of the instructions they recently enjoyed following were making fairy bread and planting bean seeds!  They have been reflecting back on their learning goals and looking forward to Term 3!

Room 20 visited Waitakere Library for Legends of Maui-Te Ika storytelling.  Everyone enjoyed this.
Year 6 Learners visited Henderson Intermediate to experience what intermediate life was like.  Learners participated in cooking, music, art and hard materials.
Room 20 got two new goldfish 'Autumn and Boston', and four small water snails.
They enjoyed learning about Matariki and made amazing kites to celebrate the Maori New Year.
Room 20 has been writing to instruct and have made hot chocolate, fairy bread and desk mats using their instructions.
They investigated the human learning brain and found out some interesting facts.
Room 20 has a 'pretend money' reward system. At the end of each term they have an auction with various items including toys, stationery, cosmetics, and a fishing rod. This terms auction was amazing as learners bid against each other to get what they wanted.

Room 21 Learners have also been learning to be self-directed Learners and it is great to see them learning to work more independently.  Room 21 have also been reflecting on their work and talking about how they can do it differently the next time.

The Learners also trained hard for the school Cross Country race.
Some of the Learners in Room 21 did well in the 5 year old races.

Room 21 did a Reading Challenge to develop a love for reading and to increase their reading mileage.  It was pleasing to see a number of the Learners reaching their target.
