Term 1 number 2 2012

Whanaungatanga (Green House):  ‘family’

Warmest greetings to our families and friends of the Whanaungatanga Learners.

Integrated Inquiry and Value: This term, the Learning Focus for an inquiry Concept was on ‘Learning to Learn – Identity’ and our Value was on ‘Respect’. The children have been learning about how we show respect to others.  For the Integrated Inquiry Concept they have been discovering that ‘Identity is shaped by relationships with people, place, time and change’.

Here are some of the Highlights for Term 1:

KOS – Keeping Ourselves Safe:  At Pomaria School, with the help from Constable Nicky, we have been working through the KOS programme.  The purpose of this programme is to create an overall community prevention programme by making parents, caregivers and teachers more aware of their responsibilities to help children keep themselves safe.  It teaches the Learners a range of safe practices they can use when interacting with others.  It encourages the Learners to seek help.

Mandarin Classes: Our senior classes have been learning Mandarin this term from our Chinese Teacher, Yini Wong.  It has been a great opportunity and experience for them.  Room 20 also has the opportunity to learn Mandarin.

House Leaders: Another special occasion is the commissioning of our House Leaders.  The House Captains for Whanaungatanga are Manaaki Janssen-Davis and T’Keyah Maue. The Deputy House Captains are Shakayla Linton-Pivac and McKoy Nepe.

Congratulations to our House Leaders.  They have been doing an awesome job taking part at our Whanaungatanga meetings on Mondays at 10am in the hall.

Stardome:  We have been privileged as a school to visit the Stardome this term.  The Learners had an interesting time learning about the Solar system, the different planets in Space and about the Sun, Moon and Stars.

Room 22: The Learners in Room 22 will be having a new teacher after the holidays in Term 2.  Mrs Fergusson will be taking on her new role as the Literacy Specialist at Pomaria School.  We welcome Mr Zhao to our Whanaungatanga team.  He will be teaching Room 22 as from Term 2.

Term 2 Learning Focus: In Term 2, our Inquiry study will be on ”Learning to Empower - Diversity” and our Values will be about ‘Manaakitanga – Caring and Sharing’.
